The Gottman method is an evidence-based therapy for couples, it is the gold standard for successful couple recovery (according to the Relationship Institute). Developed from 40 years of research on what does and doesn’t work in relationships. They did this research using over 3000 couples, some for up to 20 years. It can predict relationship success with 90% accuracy and is thoroughly tested on a variety of couple demographics including LGBTQIA+. Statistic shows this method has a 75% success rate compared to 25% for traditional counselling. It is a process oriented, phenomenological, cognitive, emotionally based approach. The 3 core areas of a relationship are targeted:
Maintaining intimacy and closeness How to manage conflict Creating shared purpose and meaning within the relationship
This method requires 3 x assessment sessions of 90 minutes. After these sessions you move onto 60-minute sessions for intervention,
The first session is with both individuals to get to know you both, get a history of your relationship, find out what both of your concerns are and what you want to improve on,
After this session you are given several pages of assessment questionnaires for each person to complete separately. These questions are about your relationship, history, emotional well-being etc, I then score these assessments and it gives me a evidence based insight into what areas need improvement in your relationship,
Session two is 2 x 45-minute individual sessions (charged as 1 x 90-minute session,) which can either be back-to-back or at different times.
This session is about each person individually, giving space to explain their individual issues and their history,
Session three is treatment planning, this session we go through the results of what the questionnaires scored the problem areas to be and together we discuss what we can do to start improving your relationship,
This counselling is very practice based so after the assessment sessions you will both be participating in different exercises within the areas you need improvement on to build the skills to overcome your problems and improve your relationship.
